So that's whats being elevated to grandpahood is really all about! It must be a wonderful to get totally smitten-ed googoogaga by the little bundle of joy. Now I know why Hian Teck rather hang out with his brood of pitter platters than his 60 something schoolmates. And JooJin, poor fella! He is allotted certain appointed hour of the day to play with his year old grandson. (Datin's order!). Kim Seng has got one but he has to divide his time between Malacca and Singapore to be near his. Hamzah has no such problem but Datin Sharifah refuses her cucu to pump petrol. Aziz Jaafar, the grandest of all grand dads. He has half a dozen. What with his acres of land around his bungalow he wouldn't mind extra hands in the years to come. Al in all we now see a new trend of newly anointed datukhood. Hurray to pampers and baby powder.
Hi Sathia, In case you missed it, here is the write-up I did which was published on Sunday in Star Mag (Heart and Soul Column), 2nd last page entitled '
Enjoying Hannah'. Sunday December 21, 2008 Enjoying Hannah By POLA SINGH Six months ago I became a ?Datuk?. No, not the kind that you have in mind. It was an award given by my daughter when I became a grand pa. Little Hannah is now the love of my life, only third in rank after my late mother and my wife. Every morning when she arrives at my house, she flashes me one of her irresistible smiles. And when I soak in her smile, all my worries of the day fade away. Then, as I waltz her in my arms to her bedroom for her morning nap and watch the delight in her eyes, the stiffness in my back disappears momentarily. As I savour the bliss of grandfatherhood, I often wonder what I could have done right to deserve such unspeakable and priceless joy! When it comes to taking care of Hannah, there is much to unlearn and relearn. How times have changed. While we raised our daughter and son based on the do?s and don?ts prescribed by the respected Dr Spock, we are now tactfully reminded by our daughter to learn of new ways espoused by authors such as Heidi Murkoff, Arlene Eisenberg and Sandee Hathaway. To put Hannah to bed, we are to consult Tracy Hogg?s book The Baby Whisperer. We learn that patting and rocking her to sleep will lead to ?accidental parenting?. Instead, after winding her down with a melody or two, we are told to leave her to fall asleep on her own. Baby Hannah now sleeps away from 7pm to 7am! My wife is amazed at the vigour I show when I play peek-a-boo with Hannah or when I demonstrate the latest techniques in cheer leading (by taking her hands and swinging them the way a cheerleader does) during her prescribed ?activity hours?. Time and again, I have been reminded not to ?over-stimulate? her as she will have difficulty falling asleep. My wife wants me to redirect part of this energy towards helping her in the household chores. I now feel my life is complete. Being in semi-retirement has given me the time to enjoy Hannah with abandon. No, I would never dream of trading this wonderful privilege for anything else.
